Forget the traditional image of a science laboratory! At the Creative Science Club of the Demonstration School of Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, science comes to life in an atmosphere filled with smiles, creativity, and hands-on discovery. Students enjoyed making one of the most popular childhood creations—DIY Slime—but this activity offered much more than just fun. It became a mini chemistry classroom where learning was combined with meaningful interactions between senior and junior students.
The Science Behind the Stretch: Learning Through DIY Slime
Making slime was more than simply mixing colorful ingredients. Senior members of the club took on the role of young mentors, guiding junior students through each step of the experiment while explaining the science behind the soft, stretchy material.
Students learned that slime is created through a chemical reaction between glue, which contains polymers, and a slime activator containing borax or another cross-linking agent. This reaction transforms the mixture from a liquid into a flexible, gel-like substance, providing a clear and engaging introduction to the concepts of chemical reactions and polymer science found in everyday life.
Learning Together: Seniors Becoming Mentors
One of the highlights of the activity was the close collaboration between senior and junior students. Senior club members patiently guided their younger peers through measuring ingredients, mixing techniques, and troubleshooting the slime-making process until each batch reached the perfect consistency.
This collaborative environment fostered confidence, curiosity, and open communication. Junior students felt comfortable asking questions, while senior students strengthened their leadership, communication, and mentoring skills—valuable soft skills that are just as important as academic knowledge.
Where Fun Inspires Learning
By combining scientific exploration with teamwork and friendship, the Creative Science Club demonstrates that science is far from boring. Instead, it becomes an exciting journey of curiosity, creativity, and discovery that inspires students to develop a lifelong passion for science.
The club is advised by Ms. Pennapa Meeto and Ms. Nutthira Yopho, who continue to support and encourage students in creating meaningful, engaging, and inspiring learning experiences.
